This APP contains a self assessment survey of hip pain as a guideline when surgical referral is appropriate.

This application was authored and designed by Dr. Russell Meldrum. He is the expert source of information on hip replacement surgery and hip exercises.

Total hip replacement surgery started in 1960 and has become
increasing successful in alleviating pain and restoring function to
patients. Patient success and satisfaction depends on the surgeon
matching the patient’s complaints to those symptoms that are best
addressed with surgery. One way to do this is to use long and
impractical outcome studies that include surveys to measure and
compare the pain and disability before and after surgery. To increase
their efficiency, many physicians use a limited number of similar
questions as part of their patient Interview. This direct type of
limited questioning is what and how I have structured this APP for
possible hip replacement patients and/or their friends and family

There are three Meta Data sources to draw from.

1) My personal experience. I have a 15 year history in successfully
performing this procedure (RussellMeldrum.com) and teaching resident
physician and surgeons how to, and who is best to perform this
surgical procedure on in order to maximize patient satisfaction.

2) There are many textbooks intended to educate physicians and
students with suggested questions and techniques for measurement of
musculoskeletal pain and function. One example of a popular book
would be:

Callahagn, J. J., A. G. Rosenberg, et al. (1998). The Adult Hip.
History and Physical Examination. K. L. Garvin and T. M. Mckillip.
Philidelphia, Lippincott-Raven. 1: 315-332.

3) There are many journal periodical articles mainly in the American
and British Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery, and the Journal of
Arthroplasty that detail the success of hip replacement surgery by
using the lengthy and previously mentioned outcome surveys. Some
examples would be:

CRAWFORD, R. W. and D. W. MURRAY (1997). "Total hip replacement:
indications for surgery and risk factors for failure." Annals of the
Rheumatic Diseases 56(8): 455-457.

Hirvonen, J., M. Blom, et al. (2006). "Health-related quality of life
in patients waiting for major joint replacement. A comparison between
patients and population controls." Health and Quality of Life Outcomes
4(1): 3.
